ELK & WHITETAIL DEER HUNTS

The Sunset Guest Ranch is located in the center of the bow area. It is a private ranch that consists of 1600 acres with eight miles of the big Blackfoot River running through it. The fishing and hunting areas consists of prime woodland, open fields, swamps, alfalfa and grain fields.

Hunters have an opportunity to receive
Two buck tags and two elk tags per season

The hunter begins the day before sunrise with a substantial breakfast. The hunter is then conducted to a tree stand for the morning hunt. To be within bow shot (15-25 yards) of a large buck is an incredible experience. Mike will put you there, alone, in silence, to await his arrival. On each hunt every year you have an excellent chance to get a trophy buck.

Sometime during mid-morning you return to the house for coffee to plan the midday drives, and night stands. Deer drives are usually conducted after lunch leaving the hunters enough time to get to their evening stand.

We believe that given the excellent food source, low hunting pressure, and general health of this herd, that the next Montana state record will be taken from this area. Several Pope and Young bucks are taken in the area every year.

The Sunset Guest Ranch is an owner operated hunting venture with full service. The log "bunkhouse", accommodating up to five hunters, is a cabin that features five beds and a bathroom. There are shared facilities in the bunkhouse (with washer/dryer in the bathroom! ) with additional bathing facilities in the main house. Hearty meals prepared fresh daily and served in the main house. All you need to do is bring your personal gear, bow, your license and lots of arrows. Everything else is provided.

Elk

The bow area consists of a high mountain valley that is a ranching community. The elk began coming into the grain and alfalfa fields about twenty years ago. Once they found the lush feed they began staying in the valley for longer and longer periods of time. We now have a herd of about 200 head that stay all the time. There are some good sized bulls and a few monsters to chose from. This provides us with great pattern hunting which we do much the same as the whitetail. During hunting season some of the mountain elk come into the hay meadows to feed especially during the rut. These are also easily patterned. For these elk we tree stand morning and night.

We have an area in the mountains that has been four point elk only for 15 years. This is where we go to bugle the elk in. There are some really nice bulls in this herd. Nothing is more exciting then when you bugle that great big bull into bow range. For this type of hunting you need to be prepared to do a fair amount of hiking in the mountains.
